Hunters

The photo of the hawk is via Unsplash, and the photo of the “lion” is our very own Hemingway (aka Hem).

Hunter

HUNTER

Cat at the window
silent and still
squirrel on the porch
oblivious until...

twitch goes the tail,
smack goes the paw,
zoom goes the squirrel
now crossing the lawn.

The Verdict

THE VERDICT

Standing at the open door
scenting the harshly cold
slightly smoky air
he leans toward the porch
then abruptly turns away
walks to the kitchen
checks his bowl
heads for the blanket
he'll be curled on
until past noon.

Haiku-a-day -- Sneaky Cat

HE THINKS WE DON'T KNOW WHERE HE'S BEEN

sneaky cat comes up
from a basement adventure --
cobwebs on his head

Sweet Little Kitty

Sweet Little Kitty

Cat curls up tight,
closes eyes, purrs.
Disguised by sleep,
sinks down deep where
cat dreams are found
and stalks, soundless,
huge now, lethal.

This is the poem I wrote for this week's Poetry Stretch at The Miss Rumphius Effect. The form is called "Climbing Rhyme." Each line can either have four words or four syllables. I went for syllables. The rhyme is internal. For more details, read this post. Here's a nice visual Tricia gave us to track the rhymes:

You're Making a BIG Assumption

YOU'RE MAKING A BIG ASSUMPTION

Willie Morris
is a catasaurus,
yet his voice is a dainty "mew."
Don't let that fool you.
