earth rotates daily
as it floats around the sun
my head is spinning

On Tuesday, I was running a little behind, but I managed to write a haiku about writing a haiku while eating a quick breakfast.  I decided to use the last line of this haiku as the first line on Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, I was running a lot behind. It was 7:00am and I hadn't started writing yet, hadn't showered, hadn't packed my lunch. I need to be out the door by 7:45 to be on time for work, so it's a good thing I had the first line of my haiku ready to go.

Thursday morning I was exhausted. I had rolled-cut-baked cookies the night before for hours and hours after an already long day at work. All I could think of was the first morning of break when I wouldn't have to set my alarm. Even though I was tired, I was pretty thrilled to find an image of a clock that really goes with my haiku!

Today, I was able to weave our current studies in science into a haiku that describes both what it's like to be a fifth grader learning about the movements of the earth around the sun (rotation/revolution; day, night, seasons) AND what this week's been like for me. Our heads are all spinning for some reason or another!

Diane has the Poetry Friday roundup at Random Noodling this week.

  2. Even when you are tired you are amazing. Playing Poetry Tag with yourself??? Who'd have thunk??? I'm really glad you get some time off starting tomorrow.

Not exactly poetry tag, but I have a spinning haiku today too. I wrote it yesterday on the way to work.

"To the Truck with the Texas Tags"

    Shiny pavement shouts
"Danger, black ice!" I applaud as
    you spin gracefully.

    1. HAHAHAHAH!!! Posh on the "rule" that haiku don't get titles! This one is SOOO perfect!!

Thanks for starting my day with a different kind of spin...and LAUGHTER!!

  3. P.S. It's a teeny bit of a bummer that haiku are not supposed to have titles, after you taught me that trick about using the title as part of the poem.

  4. Thinking of Pete Seeger's rendition of Ecclesiastics 3 ("Turn, Turn, Turn") with the last poem. May the seasons turn toward a time to fill the vessel again.

    Thanks for hosting.

  5. Been thinking about old friends lately. Some that I have reconnected with, others I haven't. Have been struck by how I lose the exact pitch and cadence of a voice to time, and how I wished that wasn't so because it seems as if something really important is gone.

    1. I'm always surprised by your comparisons. Had dinner and a walk through the lights at the Botanical Gardens with my college roommate, who has just returned to the United States after 14 months of bike touring with her newly retired husband. Like putting on your favorite pair of soft old jeans. So lovely…

    2. So true...and for family members as well as friends. After 20+ years without my dad, this is the time of year when I can hear a snatch of his voice -- he read The Night Before Christmas to us every Christmas Eve. If I listen closely, he is still there.

  6. These are each so cool on their own, and the chain of them is fabulous! I wish you a time of not spinning this holiday. Time to just be Mary Lee. Happy Poetry Friday... xo
