gravel crunches
north wind cuts into shivers
moon dissolves

  1. We're in Southern Calif. and to our amusement, we have a windchill factor being hinted at here, too! It's in the thirties, even! #wintereverywhere

  2. I'm imagining this walk through those streets, a high plains wind blowing the clouds over the almost full moon.

In Jane Hirschfield's TEN WINDOWS I learned that Bashō sometimes wrote a "headnote" (not a title) for his haiku. Probably came from the fact that he wrote so many of his haiku as part of his travel journals...? So, here goes:

Winter storm warnings up for tomorrow; wishing safe harbor for all creatures great and small.

a thin wind pierces my cheek --
    salamanders sleep
    deep underground

  3. Another late writing night. Can't believe you went walking today Mary Lee. That Colorado wind this morning was RAW! And Steve, I think the salmanders have the right idea. Think I'd like to read TEN WINDOWS too. It sounds interesting.

    mountain cathedral
    your steadfast beauty bids me
    come, be still, worship

    mighty mountain
God, big enough to create you
    is beyond my imaginings

Back story: Every Sunday, I drive an hour or so south to see my mom, who lives in Colorado Springs, where I grew up. For about two thirds of the trip, I can see Pikes Peak. Today it was especially beautiful.

    1. I watched the mountains appear in the sunrise as I drove west yesterday morning. Glorious.
