Lizzy

Lizzy

When Lewis came home
from basic training
Jack suddenly remembered the chores

Pop has been nagging him to get done.
Everyone looks up to Lewis.
He's a natural-born

pilot if there ever was one.
Why does everyone's favorite
have to go off to some war?

Camera Angles

From here
I appear confident
self-assured,
almost cocky.

If the camera went
two inches lower
you could see
my knees
knocking.

Pa

The telegram came
up the lane
in cloud of dust that hot
August day, hadn’t had rain
in weeks, so much
dust my eyes watered
but Ma read: ...REPORT
YOUR SON MISSING
IN ACTION STOP
PLANE SHOT
DOWN OVER SOUTH PACIFIC
ON JULY 29 STOP
SEARCH CREWS UNABLE
TO FIND CREW STOP
The car slowed to a stop
and turned right toward
town, while the dust
hung heavy and my
eyes just wouldn’t
stop watering.

  1. This is a really cool story that is developing. I'm beginning to understand the personalities of the characters involved and want to take this story and tell it from Pa's side after the war. I'm a'gonna think on that a bit.

That last question is super! It really shows me Izzy's relationship with Lewis, and gives me a sense of what might be coming next.

    1. I have some surprises in store for tomorrow. A new character, and Henry's attempt at fame. (Check the class picture coming up. Can you find Henry?!?)

    2. So...inquiring minds wanna know...did you have this all planned out, or are you making it up as you go? Either way, it's IMPRESSIVE!

    3. Dear Inquiring Minds,

I didn't have ANY idea this would all happen when I chose this Poetry Month project. I was quaking in my shoes, wondering how I would be able to write a variety of poem. After a poem or two, I started looking ahead to the next photos, so I have a rough idea where I want to go (and what I have to write to make the photos make sense to the story. Not sure I'll be able to sustain this story line for a month, but I've got enough to carry me through next week!

  2. OK. So here's a really unpolished poem to go with the picture.

  3. Lewis. Lizzy. Honestly, I was hoping Lizzy would be back today, and she was. I want Lewis to be ok. What you've done with sound here is wonderful, and so much with so few words. Just amazing project.

  4. Watching this story unfold is pretty amazing. I can't wait to read the next installment!

    1. Carol, may I please have permission to add this as a companion poem to Lizzy's post -- this sounds like Lewis' voice, and it gives his character more complexity. Especially when you consider what Steve imagined for Lewis!
