Today

"The secret of happiness is low expectations."
in Unsheltered, by Barbara Kingsolver. Chapter 17

Today

Today I allow myself to say
it's too cold to go outside.

Instead, I watch the sky
through my window,

imagine the knife blade breeze
that stirs winter-bare branches,

and lie like a cat with the patch of sun
moving slowly across me; time measured in warmth.

  1. Beautiful. Cats know how to be in the moment; we have a lot to learn from them.

    So many great lines:
    "imagine the knife blade breeze
    that stirs the winter-bare branches"

I don't know what that's officially called -- those knife blades and winter-bares -- but I love 'em for their image and their sounds.

And I also love that sundial image, the one that measures heat, not shadow. :)

  2. This is fabulous, Mary Lee! I love the idea of you basking, slowed down, and measuring time in warmth.

  3. So much to be said for comfort and warmth. And I love your quote from Barbara Kingsolver, too - that might sum up what I loved about the vibe of that novel.
