"That's a Bridge Too Far"

“That’s a bridge too far” is a borrowed line from the summary of the situation in Cuba as it struggles with fuel blockades, found in the 3/31/26 NYT newsletter “The Morning” by Sam Sifton.

  1. Yeeeeeah. The sight of the flames and choking on smoke resonates. The bridge is burnt, and is falling, and I fear - and maybe should embrace - that collectively this country has allowed this, so perhaps collectively we'll rebuild.

But I'm not that optimistic yet.

  2. Oof. Mary Lee. This is a brave project you are taking on, and I thank you for doing it for all of us. It feels like we are trapped on this broken bridge, and difficult to know how to reubuild it as we move forward. I am grateful to know you in this dark time. xo

  3. Phew! I finally found my way here. I forgot you have a poem blog!
I'm so glad you have chosen to write from the news. You have a much stronger constitution than I. This first poem packs a punch. I feel like we are on that burning bridge in the middle, with no plan to get off.
