Poetry Friday -- Rare

RARE from Joel Sartore on Vimeo.

I ran across this video on The Kid Should See This. It filled my heart with love (and concern) for this ball of rock and water upon which we float through space.

  1. Everything does, doesn't it. Even the things we do not know personally, or the supposedly ugly, the thought-to-be insignificant. I love the tender regard for the not-human that your poetry ALWAYS presents. Thank you.

I'm thinking the DICTIONARY OF OBSCURE SORROWS needs to create a word for the awareness of the loss of something one never knew.

And thanks for the videos. I love KIDS SHOULD SEE THIS. Probably once a week, we watch a short, thought-provoking video to end the day; often I find them on that site.

  2. Here's my tanka-a-day -- an appreciation for poetry.

    woodpeckers visit
    apples
    withered on the tree --
    these dog-eared pages
    a cache of poems

    1. A metaphor for your writer's notebook?

      Fun!

    2. Yes! And that pile of poetry books lying around with just the right poem marked, ready for a rereading.

  3. Not a haiku. Not a tanka. But kind of a poem. I will come back later to comment.

    "Milkman"

we arrive at the dark back doors
at the same time every morning
sometimes he responds to my greeting
    more often he does not

    six hours later
    i watch adolescents guzzle foam
    from green waxed cartons
    they do not comprehend
the load the milkman has carried
the joy he has not had
    for more than thirty years

    1. Oh. My heart hurts. I'm thinking of the loads so many carry for so long, and my own careless lack of empathy...

    2. So much is invisible. "The joy he has not carried" adds to his burden. So well done! Thank you.
