HOMESICK

The pears on the kitchen counter
are probably ripe by now,
and the basil in the raised bed
ready to be ground into another batch of pesto.

Perhaps the coneflowers and gayfeather have bloomed,
and certainly the morning glory vines
have locked the back gate.

But when I return, the afternoon sun will glow
through the west windows

as it always does.

  1. So much to love about this poem, Mary Lee. The pattern is very interesting. Wondering if you started with that in mind, if the pattern has a name, or if it appeared to you as you wrote it...

I really like the words "probably", "perhaps" in the first two stanzas. They give a real wistful sound to the poem, to my ears. And I really, really love that image of the morning glories that "have locked the back gate." Such an image of disuse and passage of time. Wow.
