Witnessing the Insect Apocalypse

From the essay, "Loving a Vanishing World," by Emily N. Johnston in ALL WE CAN SAVE:

"It's a constant question for me every time I'm entranced by the beauty of this world: What does it mean to love this place? What does it mean to love anyone or anything in a world whose vanishing is accelerating, perhaps beyond our capacity to save the things that we love most?"

Here's the 2018 NYTimes article about the insect apocalypse that's been haunting me for four years.

  1. Oh, my goodness...from "in a world whose vanishing is accelerating, perhaps beyond our capacity to save the things that we love most?" to no fireflies, no swallows, no reduced stems to fewer, fewer, fewer. So well written and responded. Beautiful, Mary Lee.

  2. I wait every year for those clouds of gnats & they are fewer & fewer here. You've included so many & it is heartbreaking. I remember my parents & those we visited for outdoor gatherings doing some kind of spray so that people would not be bothered at the party. It's a tragedy that needs countering now! Thanks for the all-encompassing poem.
