DESPAIR--A FIB

into
a tight ball,
pull covers over,
wail and wallow in darkness.

  1. I love the visual appearance of the poem. Is that a special form with a name? I like the uncomfortable spikey-ness of it, or sometimes it looks like a drop and squash, equally devastating. At any rate, there's a motion that I like. And, as always, you are a master of the few words that focus greatly.

    Thanks!

    1. This is my pun -- the poem's form is a Fib, following the Fibonacci sequence in the syllables (1, 1, 3, 5, 8), but the content is also a fib -- I'm quite happy right now! Life is good!

    2. Oops. I got the sequence wrong: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8.

So, I tried, but could not resist the pun.

  3. This poem definitely don't sound like you! I think the form is a perfect fit.

  4. I had forgotten about the "fib" poems, so at first I thought the despair came from telling a fib, always interesting to find what we 'find' in a poem. That wailing and wallowing, hiding in darkness shows it well, Mary Lee. (Glad it is a fib!)

  5. This image captures this emotion so carefully and well. I know this feeling. And I agree - perfect form fit! (I hope this is not really mirroring how you're feeling almost halfway through the month!) xo

  6. I love this, Mary. It can be difficult to write about a negative emotion, but you capture it perfectly

  7. This one works well as a fib indeed, and similarly glad to know you're not in despair. I also really like the image you chose, of the blackness, rounded but misshapen, floating in the whiteness....

  8. Mary Lee,
Such a fun poem. I wondered if your poem was a fib or if your character could also be in fib. OK, that probably wasn't even funny. You created a picture of true despair with your words.
